December 2002

The Winter Solstice falls on December 22 in 2002.

December 21: Winter Solstice Celebration.  Join us 6:00 pm at Schroeder's in celebrating the original "reason for the season" -- that point in time when the days get longer and the nights get shorter.  In addition to celebrating the Solstice, we will review the events of 2002 and announce the Annual Atheist Awards.  Entertainment will be provided!

December 21, (11:04 PM PST): Winter Solstice

Solstice means "sun stands still." Our ancestors watched the sky carefully. They saw the sunrise and sunset move north and south along the horizon every year. They predicted, and celebrated, the times when the sun stopped and reversed direction.  The Winter Solstice is the "birth of the sun" (not "son"), when the light begins its annual conquering battle against the darkness. It starts a new Solar Year. Science and mathematics began by studying solstices.  Winter solstice decorations and lights were part of most ancient cultures and religions. About 400 AD, Christians first attempted to replace these ancient celebrations by claiming the winter solstice as the birthday of their Jesus.  The Winter Solstice is a universal day of rejoicing and hope that good will, love and the light of knowledge will have a perpetual rebirth in the mind of humankind.  Celebrate the Solstice - It Belongs to Everyone!

November 30:  Hear American Atheists California State Director Dave Kong participate in the Commonwealth Club's special event:

Fundamentalism: The Next Generation

Since September 11, 2001, most Americans think of "fundamentalism" in terms of the Taliban and suicide bombers. But as recently as three years ago, Americans paid more attention to fundamentalism here at home in the form of Fred Phelps and religion-based home schooling. Is the trend towards religious fundamentalism limited to the Middle East, or is secularism also losing ground here at home? When younger people gravitate toward fundamentalism, is it a response to the pressures and uncertainty of the modern world? Where and why is fundamentalism gaining ground for young people of all faiths?
