San Francisco Atheists

Church/State Separation Rally

June 28, 2005

Raising awareness of the previous day's U.S. Supreme Court decisions on religious displays on public property, Bay Area Atheists gathered at 10 AM at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco for a peaceful rally in support of the Establishment Clause.  In its first rulings on the issue in a quarter century, the high court said that displays of the Christian Ten Commandments could not be displayed in courthouses, but left open the possibility to legally display the 10 Cs and other religious symbols outside of state buildings, albeit on state grounds.  These will have to be resolved on a case-by-case basis.
